Nilai: The Warzone World Championship (WWC) organisers will have to go through the normal period of about 30 days to find out whether their combat tournament will be approved by the authorities. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said that no special privilege will be given to the organisers even though the tournament, scheduled to take place from Dec 6 to 7 at Arena 9 Stadium, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, had gone viral on social media.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the application by the WWC organisers will be processed by the Sports Commissioner, who will study the insurance and permits. For national sports bodies, they will examine the athletes attending to determine if they have training. The Sports Commissioner is tasked to ensure that the application is processed normally without any special allowances due to the viral nature of the event. The process is expected to take about 30 days.
Hannah Yeoh confirmed that the ministry, through the Sports Commissioner, received the official application from the WWC organisers for registration and compliance with combat sports regulations. She reiterated her stance on the ban of children aged 15 and below in full body contact combat sports unless official approval is obtained from national or state sports bodies. She emphasized the necessity for all combat sports competitions to adhere to international federation regulations and undergo approval processes before being allowed to take place.
Hannah expressed concern about the safety of children in combat sports, stressing the importance of protecting them from unaccredited or unsanctioned organisers. Public reactions have shown objections towards the involvement of children or potential child exploitation for entertainment purposes.
The WWC promotional video had previously raised concern as it showed a scripted face-off between two child fighters from Malaysia and Indonesia during an introduction session.
