PARIT: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed that the Tanjong Malim Health Clinic will not resume 24-hour emergency operations as it goes against the clinic’s intended role and policies. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that emergency services are designated for hospitals that are equipped with the necessary facilities and adequate staffing.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that health clinics are part of public health services and are not designed to handle emergencies. He clarified that emergency care is the responsibility of hospitals. Therefore, the clinic will continue its operations from 8 am to 5 pm. After these hours, patients with common illnesses like fever or stomach aches can use the clinic’s passive on-call service.

The issue was previously raised by Perak Human Resources, Health, and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan, who mentioned that the decision regarding the clinic’s hours would be announced soon. The change to office ho
urs, which was implemented on August 1, led to dissatisfaction among local residents. Residents now have to travel approximately 30 kilometers to Slim River Hospital for emergency treatment after 5 pm.

Dr Dzulkefly reassured the public that patients with chronic conditions such as heart failure or strokes can call 999 for ambulance services to Slim River Hospital. He mentioned that this measure is part of several improvements being implemented to address public concerns. The ministry also plans to hold engagement sessions with residents to explain the changes and gather feedback.
