No Postponement for Melaka State Elections, Says Chief Minister

Melaka: Melaka has no solid grounds to postpone the state election, which is expected to take place this year in accordance with the State Constitution, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He stated that, under the State Constitution, the Barisan Nasional (BN)-led state government's term ends in December. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Chief Minister emphasized that the election could be held any time from May until the end of December, as per the existing constitutional provisions. "I do not see the need to postpone this election as there is insufficient basis to support the proposal (to postpone the state election)," he mentioned during a press gathering after officiating the Enrique of Malacca Groundbreaking Ceremony. The suggestion to delay the elections was previously raised by Pontian MP Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan, who intended to present a motion to postpone both Johor and Melaka state polls to the UMNO Supreme Council meeting, citing the geopolitical crisis in West Asia as a concern . Furthermore, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, who also serves as the state DAP chairman, proposed that the Melaka government petition the King to declare a state of emergency to postpone the state elections, due to the ongoing global supply crisis.
