Kuala lumpur: No reports of damage involving assets or federal roads have been received so far following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Sabah yesterday, said Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi. He stated that the Works Ministry (KKR) remains prepared and is closely monitoring the situation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta assured that while no damage reports have been received, the KKR will continue to monitor the situation. He made these remarks during a press conference after officiating the Launch of the Construction Action Plan 2026-2030 (CAP30) at the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia, an event also attended by CIDB Malaysia chairman Datuk Ir Yusuf Abd Wahab.
Nanta further elaborated on Malaysia's proactive measures, highlighting the adoption of building design code standards to enhance structural resilience against earthquake disasters. This code, known as the Malaysian National Annex to Eurocode 8 (MS EN 1998-1:2015), has been part of the country's construction industry requirements since the end of 2017, aligning with international standards.
The earthquake, which struck Sabah waters at 12.57 midnight, was the strongest recorded in Malaysia in 11 years. Despite its strength, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip confirmed that it did not pose any tsunami threat. The earthquake's epicenter was located 49 kilometers west of Kudat.
