New QR Code System at Kuala Lumpur Airport Enhances Efficiency with Robust Security Measures

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of a Quick Response (QR) code system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) promises to enhance efficiency in immigration clearance processes without compromising security, particularly concerning the entry of foreign nationals into Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Immigration Department confirmed that comprehensive security protocols have been established to ensure thorough screening of visitors utilizing the new system. Foreign nationals must be free from any watchlist or blacklist and are required to complete a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), although Singaporeans are exempt from this requirement. Additionally, the entry information for these individuals will be verified against biometric data and facial recognition embedded within their passport chips.

The department’s corporate communications unit emphasized that failure to meet these criteria will result in referral to an Immigration Officer for further scrutiny. Furthermore, the department has implemented strict monitoring measures since the introduction of the visa exemption scheme in 2023. These measures include dedicated monitoring teams for visitors from China and India, heightened surveillance in areas with significant foreign national traffic, and rigorous procedures regarding Entry Denial Notices.

The department also reiterated that security checks require visitors to present a return ticket and valid accommodation proof, such as confirmed hotel bookings. The QR Code system, currently being trialed at 40 dedicated autogate lanes in KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, significantly reduces immigration clearance time, taking just five to seven seconds compared to the traditional 15 to 25 seconds. This new facility is accessible to citizens from 63 eligible countries, as well as Malaysian citizens.

To optimize the process, the Immigration Department has designated separate autogate lanes for Malaysian citizens and foreign nationals, ensuring streamlined operations and enhanced efficiency.
