Kuala Lumpur: The National Fishermen’s Association (Nekmat) has warned its members against engaging in the misuse of subsidised diesel, as such actions could result in the revocation of their membership. Its chairman, Abdul Hamid Bahari, stated that losing membership would also mean losing access to various incentives, including the subsidised diesel.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdul Hamid mentioned that over the past decade, eight fishermen have had their membership revoked. While he acknowledged that the number is relatively small, he stressed the importance of addressing this issue to prevent further occurrences.
He highlighted the significant consequences of membership revocation, pointing out that affected members would lose access to subsidised fuel necessary for their sea ventures. ‘If they are involved, not only will their membership be revoked, but they will also face significant consequences, including the loss of access to subsidised fuel for going to sea. The actions taken will have a detrimental impact on them,’ he said.
Abdul Hamid urged fishermen across the country to exercise caution and avoid letting a few individuals’ actions negatively impact the entire community. ‘We urge fishermen across the country to be cautious about this issue. Don’t let one bad apple spoil the whole barrel,’ he remarked at the Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Aidilfitri reception. Also present at the event was Kedah LKIM director Ahmad Zulkifli Ismail.
