National Unity Ministry Urged to Lead Malaysia Towards Harmonious Future – Lam Thye

Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of National Unity must take a leadership role in setting a clear and progressive direction that addresses contemporary challenges while laying the groundwork for a united and harmonious Malaysia for generations to come, said National Unity Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. He emphasized the importance of adopting a bold and forward-thinking approach, moving beyond rhetoric to meaningful action, and ensuring that Malaysia’s diversity becomes the country’s greatest strength.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lam Thye highlighted the need for the ministry to foster cohesion among Malaysia’s diverse population through a renewed focus and strategic direction. Key elements for shaping the country’s future direction should include inclusive policies, enhancing multicultural education, strengthening community engagement, celebrating shared values, leveraging technology and media, institutionalizing unity metrics, promoting economic equity, youth-centric initiatives, national identity programs, and legislative support.

Lee suggested that the ministry ensure all policies are inclusive and representative of Malaysia’s diverse racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds. This would involve actively promoting equality, equity, and fairness to build trust among communities. He stressed the importance of enhancing multicultural education by revamping school curriculums to emphasize multicultural values, tolerance, and understanding.

He further advocated for empowering local communities through grassroots initiatives such as cultural exchanges, interfaith dialogues, and collaborative community projects to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. Lee also underscored the role of social media and digital platforms in shaping narratives, urging the ministry to work with media organizations to counter hate speech, disinformation, and divisive rhetoric while promoting stories that inspire unity and celebrate diversity.

To measure progress, Lee recommended developing clear indicators of unity, such as levels of interracial interaction, trust among communities, and public perception of inclusivity. Regular assessments would ensure accountability and allow for strategic adjustments. He called for youth engagement through nation-building activities, including leadership camps, volunteer programs, and cross-cultural activities, empowering young people to act as ambassadors of unity.

Lee also emphasized the need for legislative measures to discourage hate speech, discrimination, and activities that threaten social harmony, ensuring a firm foundation for unity in line with national aspirations. He concluded by stating that national unity is an ongoing process requiring commitment and collaboration from all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the people.
