Kuala Lumpur: National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has called upon Malaysians to utilize the country’s festivals as platforms for fostering understanding and respect among various communities. Emphasizing the theme of ‘harmony in diversity,’ the Minister underscored the significance of these celebrations in enhancing national unity.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Aaron highlighted the Songkran festival, celebrated by the Siamese community, as an integral part of Malaysia’s multicultural identity. He noted that the Siamese culture enriches the nation’s cultural tapestry, and affirmed that his ministry is committed to recognizing and celebrating the heritage of the country’s diverse races.
In his Facebook message, Datuk Aaron extended his wishes for a Happy Songkran and a Happy Siamese New Year to the Siamese community in Malaysia, which includes over 43,071 Malaysians of Siamese descent. He described Songkran as a festival that not only marks the start of the Thai traditional calendar but also symbolizes purification and familial love, values essential to building a harmonious nation-state.
Songkran, also known as the water festival, is a three-day celebration occurring annually on April 13, marking Thailand’s New Year.
