National Food Security Act Scheduled for Parliamentary Debate Next Year

Kuala lumpur: The National Food Security Act is slated to be put forward in Parliament next year, as announced by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. This proposed legislation is intended to stabilize the nation's food supply and is currently in the final stages of preparation before being introduced in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Mohamad Sabu emphasized the urgency of drafting the National Food Security Act, with efforts being led by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in ongoing discussions. "Insya-Allah, it will be tabled next year," he mentioned during a media briefing at the Road to MAHA 2026 Central Zone program.

The Minister had previously highlighted the need for swift action in legislating the Act to protect the country's food supply chain against disruptive factors like the El Nino phenomenon and climate change. Such challenges pose significant threats to domestic food production, necessitating the establishment of robust measures.

The proposed Act is expected to facilitate the creation of an early warning system, alongside contingency plans, and improve aid distribution mechanisms within the food production sector. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance national food security resilience in the face of environmental and climatic uncertainties.
