Kuala lumpur: The National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026-2035, launched on Tuesday, is anticipated to humanise Malaysia's education system by emphasising holistic student development beyond academic achievement. This initiative aims to balance academic knowledge with essential soft and life skills.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Universiti Malaya Faculty of Education Deputy Dean (Research) Assoc Prof Dr Zuwati Hasim highlighted that the blueprint aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's vision of 'giving soul' to education. This vision focuses on nurturing students through a balanced approach that includes emotional development, confidence-building, and communication skills.
Dr Zuwati Hasim elaborated that the blueprint aims to address the humanistic aspects of education. She noted that communication skills are becoming increasingly important as many children today face challenges with interpersonal interaction due to prolonged exposure to digital gadgets and technology.
She pointed out that new assessment methods for Year Four students could shift from exam-oriented grading to diagnostic and formative assessments. This change would focus on identifying students' strengths and weaknesses to foster improvement rather than ranking.
Zuwati cautioned that implementing these changes effectively would require addressing existing challenges, such as large classroom sizes, varying student literacy levels, and teacher readiness. Strategic planning and targeted support will be crucial for successful implementation.
She further explained that formative assessments, including project work and presentations, allow educators to evaluate students' confidence, communication, and critical thinking skills-areas often overlooked in traditional examinations that prioritise memorisation and grades.
Dr Zuwati also commented on the influence of technology on today's children, emphasizing the importance of mindful exposure to ensure effective learning and development. She noted that excessive screen time could affect communication skills, focus, and even eyesight.
The RPN 2026-2035 presents an opportunity to recalibrate the education system towards nurturing well-rounded individuals capable of thriving in various aspects of life.
