National Diving Programme Awaits World Aquatics Championships Outcome: Ken Nee

Kuala Lumpur: The national diving training programme will remain unchanged with the new technical director, Yeoh Ken Nee, adopting a wait-and-see approach pending the outcome of the World Aquatics Championships 2025 in Singapore from July 26 until August 3. Ken Nee, who assumed his post last month, stated that the existing programme implemented by his predecessor, Bryan Nickson Lomas, remains effective, notably the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ken Nee emphasized that everything is proceeding according to the coaches’ planning, with divers having already set their targets, events, and MQS. He expressed a desire not to disrupt the current programme. However, he noted that if the outcomes are not satisfactory, he may need to step in to oversee potential changes in training, coaching, or the divers’ approach.

MQS serves as the scoring benchmark that national divers must achieve to qualify for international competitions and represent the country. Ken Nee revealed that interest has been expressed by Australia, Canada, and Spain in holding joint training sessions with Malaysia’s national diving squad ahead of this year’s World Aquatics Championships.

He mentioned that these nations have requested to train in Malaysia for five days, and he hopes to accommodate all of them. The former Olympian believes that joint training would be beneficial for Malaysian divers, providing exposure to world-class techniques and the training culture of top divers from traditionally strong countries like Australia and Canada, who have previously achieved podium finishes at the World Aquatic Championships.
