Kuala lumpur: The conditional pardon allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest does not weaken the government's commitment to fighting corruption and abuse of power, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized that all corruption cases, including those involving Najib, must proceed in accordance with the law.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stated that his role as Prime Minister is to provide advice on legal implications, national stability, and the principle of the rule of law, while also considering detailed written advice from the Attorney General. Ultimately, the Constitution grants powers to His Majesty the King, and Anwar expressed hope that the decision would be accepted.

Anwar stressed the importance of maintaining a firm stance against corruption in Malaysia, highlighting the need for public support to ensure that misconduct or abuse of power for personal gain is not taken lightly. He reiterated the necessity for all Malaysians to support the enforcement of the law to prevent any leader or individual from abusing power for personal enrichment.

When questioned about the need for clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) for house arrest, Anwar indicated that this issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has granted Najib a conditional pardon, permitting him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, contingent upon the payment of a RM50 million fine. The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister's Department stated that the decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya at Istana Negara today.
