Myanmar Refugee Repatriation to Be Conducted Responsibly, Says Minister

Kuala Lampur:Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil emphasized that the repatriation of Myanmar refugees will be conducted in an orderly, responsible, and lawful manner. This assurance came after discussions with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, The meeting with SUHAKAM focused on various aspects of refugee management, including the procedures and security measures necessary for repatriating Myanmar refugees. Humanitarian concerns were also highlighted as a key area requiring attention.

Fahmi expressed gratitude to SUHAKAM Chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus for hosting the meeting, which he deemed crucial for understanding multiple perspectives on refugee issues. The collaboration aims to ensure a balanced approach considering humanitarian viewpoints.

On September 29, Malaysia initiated the first phase of a repatriation program for approximately 1,500 Myanmar nationals, as part of a larger effort involving 5,000 individuals who have agreed to return voluntarily from detention centers. The government is mindful of public concerns regarding the handling of foreign nationals, ensuring that all actions align with legal and procedural standards.
