Penang: The investigation report on the MV Mekar Jaya and Teluk Bahang Ferry collision on Sept 1 will be completed after all relevant information and statements are reviewed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin stated that a Joint Investigation Committee was formed following the incident. The committee, comprising the Northern Region of the Marine Department Malaysia (JLM), SPPP, and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), is conducting a thorough probe into the collision.

The committee is tasked with identifying the cause of the collision and the parties involved, as well as proposing improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future. Several investigative actions have been carried out and are ongoing, including inspections of the vessels involved and recording statements from relevant parties. An initial report on the incident has also been submitted to the Special Task Force established by the Ministry of Transport.

Yeoh mentioned that SPPP would take necessary follow-up action after the report is finalized, based on the findings and any further directives or decisions. He emphasized that SPPP and PPSB would continue to cooperate fully with all parties to ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation.

The incident occurred at 8.40pm on Sept 1 when the Teluk Bahang Ferry, which was heading towards Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal (PSAH), collided with MV Mekar Jaya in the waters of Penang Port. MV Mekar Jaya was traveling from Air Dalam Jetty in Butterworth to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal when the collision occurred. Twenty-one passengers were initially reported injured.
