Glasgow: Muhamad Aznil Bidin aims to be the first Malaysian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals when he competes in the men's 65 kilogramme (kg) event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games here tomorrow.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 32-year-old, who clinched the 62 kg gold medal in 2018 and the 61 kg gold medal in 2022, expressed that matching the achievements of former national weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim, who won two Commonwealth Games gold medals, has motivated him to aim even higher.

Muhamad Aznil stated, "So far, there has yet to be a Malaysian weightlifter who has won three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. So I will try to create history by winning a third gold medal. That's my dream and it inspires me."

He mentioned that he is thoroughly prepared for the competition and has acclimated well to the conditions in Glasgow. He anticipates strong competition from weightlifters from India and Papua New Guinea in tomorrow's event.

Muhamad Aznil plans to lift a combined 310 kg and has left it to his coach to devise the best strategy to tackle his opponents in a bid to defend his gold medal. In his previous triumph, he secured the 61 kg gold medal with a combined lift of 285 kg, achieving 127 kg in the snatch and 158 kg in the clean and jerk, setting a Games record.

The weightlifting events, scheduled to begin tomorrow at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo in Glasgow, will continue over the course of five days.
