Mother Challenges Conclusion of Daughter’s Death at School

Rabat:Noraidah Lamat, the mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, expressed disbelief that her daughter voluntarily jumped from the third floor of her school building. During an inquest at the Coroner's Court, Noraidah described Zara Qairina as a cheerful and resilient teenager who would not easily succumb to provocations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Noraidah made these statements while being questioned by lawyer Datuk Ram Singh, representing one of the teenagers charged in connection with the bullying case tied to her daughter's death. Ram Singh referenced expert testimony suggesting the possibility that Zara Qairina had jumped voluntarily, to which Noraidah responded with doubts based on her understanding of her daughter's character.

She explained that the provocations included taunts and bullying from other students at the hostel. Despite these challenges, Noraidah did not notice any signs of emotional distress in her daughter during their phone conversations on July 13 and 14, 2025.

In her testimony, Noraidah also mentioned that she had not been provided with clear information by the police regarding the investigation into her daughter's death, and her messages to the investigating officer went unanswered.

Noraidah was unaware of the nationwide fundraising campaign for the "Justice for Zara" initiative and had no details about the billboards erected in Sabah, though she was aware they existed. Zara Qairina passed away at Hospital Queen Elizabeth on July 17, 2025, after being found unconscious near a drain at her school hostel.
