MOT Reviews KLIA Incident, Forms Task Forces To Probe PTP, Butterworth Cases

Kuala lumpur: The Transport Ministry (MOT) has set up two special task forces to investigate the container explosion at Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor and the runaway commuter train incident at Butterworth Station in Penang. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the decision following the ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting, aiming for transparent and independent investigations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the meeting also reviewed the recent rainwater overflow incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1. The container explosion on board MV Kyparissia on November 7 led to three deaths and three injuries. The task force will assess operational procedures, safety compliance, and the handling of hazardous cargo. On November 8, an empty commuter train overshot the end of the track at Platform 4, Butterworth Station. The task force will investigate the cause and suggest improvements to prevent recurrence.

Loke stated that the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has been tasked to initiate an investigation paper on the train driver and will take appropriate follow-up action once the probe concludes.

Regarding the KLIA Terminal 1 incident, Loke noted that the overflow happened during waterproofing works carried out by Teras Budi Resources Sdn Bhd. This work is part of a RM5.27 million contract running from April 15 this year to April 14, 2026. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has issued a stop-work order to conduct an internal investigation and immediate rectification, with firm action promised against the contractor for negligence.

Loke underscored that safety and operational integrity are MOT’s top priorities, urging all transport operators to adhere strictly to safety procedures and ensure continuous maintenance and monitoring. He added that MOT will provide further updates on the progress of the task force investigations in due course.
