MOT Moves To Enforce Compensation From DUI Offenders

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is in the process of drafting amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) that would mandate individuals convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs to pay compensation to the families of their victims. This initiative is part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to combat the dangers posed by drink-driving. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that this proposed compensation would be in addition to the existing prison sentences outlined in Act 333. The amendments to the Act, which were passed in the Dewan Rakyat and enforced in October 2020, already stipulate heavier penalties for offenders. Under Section 44 of the Act, individuals who drive under the influence and cause a fatality can face imprisonment of 10 to 15 years and fines ranging from RM50,000 to RM100,000. For repeat offenders, the penalties increase to imprisonment of 15 to 20 years and fines between RM100,000 and RM150,000. Minister Loke urged the Royal Malaysia Police to accelerate their investigation into a recent accident in Klang involving a motorcyclist to ensure that the case is swiftly referred to the Attorney General's Chambers for prosecution. He expressed hope that the courts would impose the maximum possible sentence if the offender is found guilty. The MOT also extended condolences to the family of Amirul Hafiz Omar, the victim of the tragic accident, calling his death a result of criminal negligence. The incident, as reported by Klang Selatan district police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey, occurred on Jalan Raya Barat in Klang. Amirul Hafiz Omar was killed when he was struck by a car driven by an individual under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The collision, which happened around 11:40 am, resulted in Amirul being thrown onto the roof of another car, leading to his death at the scene.
