Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has outlined its Budget 2027 priorities, aiming to harness technology for societal benefits. Minister Datuk Seri Chang Lih Kang emphasized the ministry's commitment to expanding technological accessibility in rural and off-grid regions, enhancing the well-being of the populace.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MOSTI has submitted its allocation request to the Ministry of Finance with a focus on developing technologies that simplify daily life, particularly for those in underserved areas. Minister Chang highlighted the importance of deploying technologies that directly impact people's lives, aiming to make everyday activities more manageable.

Minister Chang spoke on these initiatives after inaugurating the 9th Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2026, organized by Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He underscored the role of technology in addressing disasters, citing Malaysia's preparedness to incorporate technological advancements in search and rescue (SAR) operations.

He elaborated on the use of technology during the Batang Kali landslide tragedy in Selangor, where drones, space technology, and DNA analysis were instrumental in victim identification and ensuring the safety of rescue personnel. These technologies also aid in monitoring areas for potential subsequent disasters.

The utilization of space technology was highlighted as a critical tool in detecting movements or changes in landslide-prone regions, thereby enabling SAR teams to perform more precise risk assessments and improve response efficacy.
