Mosques Must Be Built With Pure Intention, Values Not Just For Greatness And Splendour – PM Anwar

Cherok Tok Kun: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the construction of a mosque should be based on pure intention and correct appreciation of Islam, not for the purpose of showing off greatness and splendour. The Prime Minister emphasized that mosques developed with good and proper foundations will strengthen the faith and piety of Muslims, thereby uniting the society in the country.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister stated that building a mosque is a collective responsibility, serving as a base for learning to pray, paying zakat, and understanding the principles of religion. He highlighted that the Islamic institution should be linked with assistance and concern for the community. Anwar referred to the al-Quran, noting that mosques founded on piety to Allah SWT embody pure values, promote unity, sculpt faith, and care for the community, rather than showcasing greatness and splendour.

Anwar warned that if the intention behind mosque construction is flawed, it does not foster Islamic appreciation or understanding, and the mosque could become detrimental. He made these remarks at the launch of the Cherok Tok Kun Bawah Mosque Reconstruction Ceremony, attended by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Human Resources Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong, and Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid.

Furthermore, Anwar stressed that mosques should be fields for building piety, particularly among leaders who face challenges like greed and corruption. He addressed the issues in leadership, where some individuals exceed their boundaries after being entrusted with power. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of repaying the people’s trust with honesty and moderation, not through oppression or misappropriation.

Anwar remarked that leadership is a responsibility, not a license for greed and moral decline. He asserted that true wealth lies in integrity and loyalty, reminding that power and position are temporary, and accountability to Allah will follow. Expressing his vision for the MADANI Government, Anwar committed to change and improvement, welcoming criticism as a prerogative of the people, while expressing gratitude for the opportunity to practice and uphold his principles.
