MOE’s PETAH KPM Contest Enhances Language Skills and Celebrates Talents

Accra:The Ministry of Education's PETAH KPM competition is designed to enhance students' proficiency in Bahasa Melayu and English through contests that develop communication skills, critical thinking, and language proficiency.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia deputy rector Dr. Zanariah Ibrahim stated that the programme aligns with the Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening the English Language (MBMMBI) policy, which also focuses on fostering unity among the Ministry of Education community.

The four-day PETAH KPM 2026 programme, which commenced on Monday, attracted participants from various groups, including students, teachers, lecturers, MOE officials, and parents. Dr. Zanariah noted that the event not only served as a competition but also showcased the language proficiency of MOE personnel at different levels.

PETAH KPM 2026 provides a strategic platform for implementing the MBMMBI policy holistically. It emphasizes the need for proficiency in both Bahasa Melayu and English to promote fluent and courteous communication across different ethnic groups. The programme featured 16 language competitions, such as debates, speech, public speaking, and choral speaking.

Improvements this year included the addition of English debate and speech contests for primary and secondary school students, as well as public speaking competitions. The participation of students from Chinese and Tamil national-type schools in events like choral speaking and speech contests reflects efforts to foster unity through language.

Dr. Zanariah highlighted the inclusion of students from the Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI) in showcasing their talents, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the potential of students with special educational needs in music, performance, and communication.

With the theme 'Seni Berbahasa Wahana Perpaduan MADANI' (The Art of Communicating as a Medium of MADANI Unity), PETAH KPM underscores the role of language in uniting society and nurturing a courteous, creative generation grounded in MADANI values. The initiative supports the Malaysia Education Plan 2026-2035 by shaping students' character through courteous speech and stimulating critical and creative thinking. It also aims to strengthen global communication literacy, fostering well-rounded individuals capable of excelling internationally.
