Kuala lumpur: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit the Philippine Islands region at 1.45 pm yesterday. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a statement said the earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometres (km), occurred 190 km north of Laoag City, Philippines.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia stated that there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
