Langkawi: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kedah and Perlis has detained two fishing vessels suspected of carrying out an illegal ship-to-ship (STS) oil transfer in waters off Langkawi yesterday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kedah and Perlis Maritime Director First Admiral Romli Mustafa stated that the local and foreign fishing vessels were intercepted at about 9 pm, approximately 4.5 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Chinchin. The operation resulted in the detention of two skippers and four Thai crew members, aged between 29 and 59, who were allegedly conducting the oil transfer.
Romli further elaborated that the total value of the seizure is estimated to exceed RM600,000. The vessels, along with the seized items and detained crew, have been taken to the Kedah and Perlis Maritime Jetty for further investigation. Initial inspections have revealed offences under several legislations, including the Supply Control Act 1961, Fisheries Act 1985, Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, Immigration Act 1959/63, and Customs Act 1967.
He emphasized that the agency would not compromise on illegal activities and is committed to intensifying patrols in Malaysian waters. Romli also urged the public to report any maritime crimes or emergencies via the 999 hotline or through the Kedah and Perlis Maritime Operations Centre at 04-966 2750.
