Kuala lumpur: Rising star Mirabel Ting made a strong statement on the first day of the Maybank Championship 2025, finishing tied 11th with a remarkable five-under 67 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). The 19-year-old golfer from Miri impressed with her performance, which included six birdies and only one bogey.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mirabel demonstrated exceptional control and focus, beginning her round with a birdie on the first hole. She maintained her composure throughout, saying, “I had a really good start, I birdied the first hole. I just try to tell myself to stay patient, and you know, if the putt does drop, it will.” Her strategy of remaining calm and patient paid off as she finished the round successfully.
Having turned professional this year, Mirabel acknowledged the challenges she faced in adapting to professional golf. She shared, “I did struggle a bit adapting to life as a professional golfer, but I keep telling myself professional golf is hard. You just try to get out there every day and enjoy every second.” Her focus remains on her own game rather than the leaderboard, which she believes is key to her success.
Mirabel’s debut at last year’s Maybank Championship as an amateur has helped her approach this year’s event with confidence. She emphasized that the pressure and expectations are significant, but she remains focused on her game. “At the end of the day, amateur or professional, you’re still hitting the golf ball by yourself. So that doesn’t make a difference,” she noted.
Known for her ability to stay calm under pressure, Mirabel attributes her growth to learning from past mistakes. She explained, “I have made a lot of mistakes in the past on a golf course. When I started bogeying, I used to get really nervous and here comes the bogey train. I knew I just have to let it go.”
In other performances, Liyana Durisic ended the day as the second-best Malaysian with a score of four-under 68, placing her tied 21st. Meanwhile, Kelly Tan, Ashley Lau, and Genevieve Ling each carded three-under 69, finishing in a tie for 32nd.
