MINISTER CALLS FOR SWIFT SYARIAH RULINGS TO PREVENT CONFUSION AMONG MUSLIMS

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar has urged state muftis to swiftly issue statements on emerging issues involving Syariah law to prevent confusion among Muslims. The call emphasizes the critical role of muftis in providing timely guidance on legal matters arising within the community.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohd Na’im stated that state muftis possess the authority to provide opinions and are essential resources when questions arise within the Muslim community. He stressed the need for immediate rulings on issues related to Islamic law to prevent uncertainty and ensure that the community is not left in doubt. “When issues involving legal rulings arise, the public often has questions. With the authority they hold, muftis should issue immediate guidance to ensure the community is not left in doubt, wondering what to do or how to understand the matter,” he remarked.

The minister’s comments came in response to an incident invol
ving a private hospital in Selangor that allegedly withheld the body of a newborn for 16 days due to the father’s inability to settle delivery costs. Dr Mohd Na’im has requested the Federal Territories Mufti Associate Professor Datuk Dr Luqman Abdullah to provide a ruling on the matter from an Islamic perspective.

Furthermore, Dr Mohd Na’im mentioned that the MAIWP Asnaf Outreach Squad has stepped in to identify and assist the affected family, ensuring they receive necessary support.
