Mindef Assigns Investigation of Soldier’s Death to Police – Mohamed Khaled

Kuala Lumpur: The Defence Ministry (Mindef) is entrusting the police with the investigation into the death of Private Muhammad Muqriz Aseri from the Sri Miri Camp, Sarawak, that occurred on Monday. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized that the ministry would extend full cooperation to ensure a transparent investigation process.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated, “We do not tolerate such immoral acts, and once the investigation is complete, we will examine how this incident happened to ensure it does not recur.” He urged patience regarding the investigation’s progress, advising against sharing details prematurely to prevent misinformation or confusion. This statement was made during the 2024 LTAT Dividend Announcement ceremony.

The minister also cautioned against drawing parallels with a previous incident at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), highlighting the rarity of such events. “This incident rarely happens. It is an isolated case, considering we have 5,000 recruits annually. It is too early to determine whether elements of abuse were involved, so let’s not jump to conclusions,” he added.

In response to the incident, police have detained two military personnel, both privates, to assist with the investigation into Muhammad Muqriz’s death. Miri district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu reported that the suspects, aged 22 and 24, have been remanded for seven days until April 2, under investigation for Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The Malaysian Army disclosed that Muhammad Muqriz, who belonged to the 20th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, died from blunt trauma to the chest, which resulted in heart damage.
