Kuala lumpur: MIC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) will evaluate the resolution approved at the party’s 79th Annual General Assembly to withdraw from Barisan Nasional (BN) before deciding on subsequent actions, MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran announced. Delegates have also authorized him and the CWC to chart the party’s future course.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Vigneswaran emphasized that MIC remains steadfast in backing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership until the conclusion of his mandate, irrespective of any political decisions the party might later undertake. “We are still firm in giving support to him (Anwar) for the next two years. We keep our word. We are not with any other party. For five years we have assured that we will give our full support to the Prime Minister (Anwar), and that will continue,” he stated during a press conference after concluding the delegates’ debate at the assembly, which took place at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC).
Vigneswaran further explained that he had communicated to Anwar the constraints and challenges confronting MIC, underscoring that these issues did not originate from Pakatan Harapan (PH). He clarified that MIC has not resolved to join any political coalition, and a formal decision to exit BN remains pending. “Today, the power to decide MIC’s direction and the steps the party should take has been entrusted to the leadership. We will discuss with the relevant parties moving forward,” he remarked.
Earlier, MIC delegates unanimously endorsed the resolution to leave BN and entrusted the leadership with determining the appropriate timing and exploring new political alignments. Vigneswaran mentioned that he had met with Anwar on Friday to discuss MIC’s status within BN. He noted that the prime minister was understanding and aware of the party’s position and dilemmas.
Vigneswaran added that the party’s actions are not solely motivated by political ambitions but are guided by the necessity to ensure that any power-sharing arrangement is rooted in dignity and principle. In response to a query about whether he had conferred with BN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding MIC’s potential exit from the coalition, Vigneswaran confirmed that no such meeting had occurred.
