Mersing: Mersing has been selected as the second destination for the Jelajah Bandar Bersih Johor 2030, a strategic initiative by the state government, in collaboration with the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) and local authorities (PBTs), to promote a culture of cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, SWCorp chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed stated that the roadshow aims to cover 15 locations across Johor by 2026, in line with the goal of transforming cities in Johor into clean cities by 2030. Khalid Mohamed made these remarks at the launch of the ‘Jelajah Bandar Bersih Johor: Anda di Hati Kami’ logo, which symbolizes an inclusive approach and reflects a collaborative effort with deep meaning.
The study conducted by SWCorp indicates that 97.7 percent of the local population supports the Bandar Bersih Johor 2030 initiative, demonstrating high public awareness. The initiative is designed to empower the community to actively participate in activities promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability. Khalid emphasized the importance of collective commitment and cooperation to realize the aspiration of Bandar Bersih Johor 2030.
The programme, officiated by Datuk Samsolbari Jamali, the Deputy Speaker of the Johor Legislative Assembly, featured interactive activities across key locations in the district: Taman Wawasan, Pantai Air Papan, Mersing Harbour Centre, and Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim. Activities included the handover of the Bandar Bersih Johor 2025-2030’s smart partnership, painting of bin placement squares, a new bin exchange session, a demonstration of the drive-thru recycling centre (DTRC) and composting machines, and the Appreciate Food Avoid Waste campaign.
The roadshow serves as a platform for engagement between SWCorp, local authorities (PBT), and related agencies with the local community. It is scheduled to be implemented in phases, across 15 locations throughout Johor, by 2026. Khalid added that initiatives like the ‘Trash to Cash’ and ‘Free Market’ not only promote recycling and waste reduction but also empower communities by creating opportunities within a sustainable circular economy framework.
Last year’s performance saw 3.435 million kilogrammes of recyclable materials collected through the Trash to Cash programme, generating a sales value of RM1.527 million. This achievement reflects growing public awareness and participation in recycling efforts.
After Mersing, the roadshow’s next destinations include Kota Tinggi, Segamat, Iskandar Puteri, Simpang Renggam, Batu Pahat, Muar, Pontian, Labis, Tangkak, Pasir Gudang, Kluang, Yong Peng, and Kulai, scheduled until 2026.
