Kuala lumpur: Neglected mental health can cause individuals to plummet towards self-destruction, erosion of familial ties, and breakdown in society if not tackled properly.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) psychology officer Dr. Sarada Devi R Subramaniam emphasized that stigma and certain cultural beliefs remain significant barriers preventing individuals from seeking professional help. This reluctance leads many to suppress their emotions and forgo proper treatment, despite the potential life-saving benefits of early intervention.
Dr. Sarada Devi noted that some families fear the perception that their child or family member might have problems. She urged families to take proactive measures before adverse events occur, advocating for the use of existing counseling services provided by institutions like the LPPKN and the Social Welfare Department. Speaking on the Kasih Lensa Keluarga podcast by Bernama TV, she highlighted the importance of these services as safe spaces where certified counselors ensure patient privacy.
She pointed out that although solutions can sometimes be straightforward, delaying addressing the issues can exacerbate the situation. The LPPKN offers various programs and modules to support individuals facing mental health challenges, including breathing and laughing therapies aimed at promoting calmness and self-help.
Dr. Sarada Devi also called upon colleagues and employers to play their roles in mitigating workplace burnout. She emphasized the need for empathy and support should anyone exhibit signs of stress, and underscored the importance of self-care, encouraging individuals to take time for themselves, their families, and engage in self-therapy.
In conclusion, Dr. Sarada Devi reinforced the message that no one should endure stress alone, reminding everyone that solutions are available for those experiencing mental health issues.
