Melaka Thanks Federal Government For RM660 Mln WTE Project

Melaka: The Melaka government has expressed its appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the RM660 million Waste-To-Energy (WTE) plant project in Sungai Udang, expected to be completed by 2029. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said a groundbreaking ceremony will be held soon and officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this project aims to enhance the efficiency of solid waste management and supports the state’s green agenda. Rais mentioned during the Elected Representative for the People (WRUR) programme for the Bemban state constituency that although construction had previously faced some delays, all administrative matters have been resolved and the project is now in the implementation phase.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming had previously stated that the WTE plant is expected to process up to 1,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, generate 22 megawatts of electricity, and reduce over 259,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is equivalent to the impact of planting over four million trees.

The 3.96-hectare facility will also include a 96-cubic-metre leachate treatment system, with construction scheduled to begin next year and span three years after fulfilling various preliminary requirements.
