Melaka Sees Surge in 4WD Thefts, Syndicate Suspected of Smuggling Vehicles Abroad

Melaka: A total of 15 vehicle theft incidents, specifically targeting four-wheel drives (4WD), have been reported in Melaka since January 1, resulting in losses of over RM1 million. These thefts are occurring at an alarming rate of approximately one case per week.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar has indicated that the thefts are likely the work of a syndicate. This group is suspected of stealing the vehicles to sell them in neighboring countries for approximately RM10,000 each. The syndicate reportedly has the capability to steal a 4WD vehicle within three minutes using specialized equipment, with Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, and Ford Ranger among the preferred targets.

Dzulkhairi noted that the increase in 4WD vehicle thefts in Melaka is largely driven by high demand in neighboring countries. The syndicate primarily targets vehicles parked in residential areas and shopping malls, with most of the vehicles being locked at the time of theft, he explained during a press conference.

The press conference coincided with a ceremony for the conferment of ranks and handover of duties for new heads of the Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) and the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID). Dzulkhairi added that most thefts have been reported in the Melaka Tengah district, and the stolen vehicles are believed to be transported northward, using a route leading to several neighboring countries.

He further explained that the car theft syndicate is thought to monitor their victims’ movements over time, waiting for an opportunity to strike when the vehicle is vulnerable. In response, Melaka police have assembled a special task force aimed at tracking down the syndicate. Vehicle owners are being advised to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles are securely stored to prevent further thefts.

During the ceremony, ACP Nor Azizan Yusof was appointed as the new head of JKDNKA, while Supt Nazri Ismail took on the role of head of NCID.
