Melaka Reports Nearly 2,000 Dengue Cases in 2023, Intensifies Prevention Efforts

MELAKA: Melaka has recorded a total of 1,972 dengue cases from January 1 to November 16 this year, as reported by Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem, the state’s Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee Chairman. The cases have been distributed across different regions, with Melaka Tengah reporting the highest number.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the breakdown of cases includes 1,241 in Melaka Tengah, 214 in Alor Gajah, and 517 in Jasin, with two fatalities reported so far. In response to the outbreak, the state government and the Health Department are intensifying efforts to control the spread of dengue. These efforts include the Aedes Wolbachia mosquito release project, which has been implemented in several areas such as Taman Bemban Jaya in Jasin and Pangsapuri Taman Tasik Utama.

Ngwe detailed these initiatives during the Melaka State Legislative Assembly meeting, responding to inquiries from Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin regarding the measures being taken to address the situation. He emphasized that beyond the mosquito release project, control activities are ongoing for both isolated cases and larger outbreaks. These include eliminating Aedes mosquito breeding sites and conducting larviciding, thermal space spraying (SRT), and ultra-low volume spraying (ULV).

Further collaboration with the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) is also part of the strategy to manage declared dengue outbreak areas. Weekly announcements every Friday and the distribution of cleanup pamphlets every Saturday are among the initiatives by JPNIN to raise awareness and prevent further spread of dengue.

The state continues to urge residents to participate actively in these preventive measures to curb the rise in cases and ensure public health safety.
