Melaka: The Melaka Health Department has introduced the Child Evaluation, Referral and Development Assessment Services (CERDAS) programme to provide early childhood developmental screening at the Seri Tanjung Health Clinic here since January.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Health Director Dr. Ruzita Mustaffa stated that the programme aims to expedite early detection and treatment for children with developmental issues, including autism, speech delay, hearing problems, and growth disorders. CERDAS involves screening and assessment by paediatricians, speech therapists, and psychiatrists, in collaboration with health clinics and Melaka Hospital, prior to diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Ruzita emphasized that CERDAS is the first programme of its kind in the state and highlights their commitment to ensuring every child grows up healthy, active, and well-balanced. Her comments came during the launch of the MADANI Health Carnival: Jom Sihat 2026, officiated by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.

To date, eight children have undergone screening under the programme, with several referred for further assessment and early intervention. Dr. Ruzita noted that screening is available for children aged two and above, and parents may visit the Seri Tanjung Health Clinic directly without a referral.

She added that the initiative reduces waiting times for screening and treatment, highlighting that appointments at the Speech Therapy Clinic at Melaka Hospital can take up to a year due to specialist shortages. Under CERDAS, the waiting period is shorter compared with conventional referral procedures, although no specific screening targets have been set as diagnosis timelines vary for each child.
