Kota Kinabalu: Media practitioners, particularly journalists in Sabah, are encouraged to proactively explore and master artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance creativity and improve the quality of news reporting while maintaining journalistic ethics.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Utusan Borneo Sabah journalist Siti Aisyah Narudin highlighted the numerous AI applications and tools available for journalists to streamline their work, including audio or video transcription and fact-checking. She emphasized the benefits of AI technology and urged journalists to leverage AI to enhance their capabilities and creativity in producing news reports. Siti Aisyah, who also serves as the Sabah Journalists Association secretary, noted that courses like the ‘AI For Journalism: Transcription and Smart Tools’ course, attended by 25 local journalists, are valuable for expanding AI knowledge among media practitioners.
Stephanie Lee, a journalist with The Star, stressed the importance of media practitioners being ready to explore technological advancements, including AI, to perform their duties more efficiently. She advocated for embracing technology to simplify work processes while ensuring it is not misused.
Yenompiyaah Mabin from Malaysia Press echoed the sentiment, advising media professionals to understand and utilize AI wisely without compromising journalistic ethics. Meanwhile, RTM Sabah broadcast journalist Gabriel Michael Staun praised the initiative by Bernama, noting that the course provided valuable exposure to AI applications in journalism, helping journalists produce news content quickly and accurately. He expressed hope for the continuation of such programs to empower Sabah journalists.
