Kuala lumpur: The media must continue to play its role as a source of authentic and accurate information for the people, especially as the world faces economic uncertainty and a global supply crisis, says Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah. He emphasized the importance of media in delivering responsible news amidst the proliferation of fake news, which has become increasingly prevalent in the digital era.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdul Halim highlighted the current global challenges, including economic uncertainty and rising costs of fuel and daily necessities, which are also affecting Malaysia. In this context, he underscored the crucial role of media as an information bridge that ensures the public receives accurate news, preventing them from being swayed by misinformation that could incite public anxiety.
Abdul Halim conveyed these remarks during the closing ceremony of the HAWANA-DBP 2026 Pantun Festival at Kompleks Kraf. The event was attended by notable figures such as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer and National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2026 Working Committee chairman, Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and other distinguished guests from the media and cultural sectors.
The festival, organized by Bernama in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), celebrated the pantun heritage as a cultural medium that bridges generations within the Malay community. Abdul Halim praised Bernama's role in preserving cultural voices amidst rapid technological advancements and the global information surge.
He further noted that besides reporting news, journalists act as witnesses and guardians of the nation's history. The pantun festival not only honored journalists but also elevated the Malay language, emphasizing its importance in knowledge, communication, and unity. This effort highlights the journalism profession's contribution to preserving cultural heritage and fostering an informed and ethical society.
Abdul Halim expressed hope that such programs will invigorate the use of the Malay language in the media and inspire young journalists to value the nation's cultural legacy. He assured that the government will continue supporting initiatives that uphold the national language and strengthen the media industry for sustainable and competitive growth.
The HAWANA-DBP 2026 Pantun Festival was part of a series of events leading up to HAWANA 2026, scheduled to culminate in Penang on June 20 under the theme 'Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility.' Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, HAWANA serves as a premier platform to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of Malaysian media practitioners.
