Erbil:Sarawak Media organisations in Sarawak are leveraging the Media Innovation Fund to enhance their newsrooms through workforce training, equipment upgrades, and the adoption of new technologies.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak Tribune editor-in-chief Aden Nagrace noted that the fund has enabled the organisation to strengthen its digital storytelling capabilities, providing journalists with the tools necessary to produce content across multiple platforms. This investment is crucial as the newspaper expands its digital operations beyond traditional print journalism. Nagrace emphasized the need for digital transformation, which requires considering various forms of presentation to help audiences understand issues better.
On October 30, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced a RM30 million allocation under the Media Innovation Fund 2.0 to bolster the media industry. This initiative focuses on digitalisation, talent development, and the adoption of emerging technologies, including AI, building on the previous Media Innovation Fund announced during the National Journalists' Day celebrations in June 2025. Fahmi stated that 72 media companies benefited from the previous fund, which supported media transformation initiatives like training and operational improvements.
DayakDaily project manager Marlynda Chan detailed how the news portal used the fund to organise an AI workshop and a professional makeup class. The initiative was aimed at ensuring journalists maintain a professional appearance and upgrade their equipment for better field reporting. Chan highlighted the transformative impact of the funding, which improved content quality and newsroom efficiency. The AI training has equipped journalists with the knowledge to use tools ethically, ensuring technology serves as an assistant rather than a replacement. The new professional cameras and video equipment have significantly improved audio-visual output, leading to higher-quality coverage of events and interviews.
