MCMC Uncovers Over 15,000 Fake Accounts Impersonating Royal Family

Kuala lumpur: A total of 15,296 fake accounts using the names of 26 members of the Royal family were identified between January and April this year, based on monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and public complaints.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil reported that these fake accounts included those impersonating the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. Fahmi presented these findings to the Sultan of Selangor during an audience to update His Royal Highness on the removal of fake accounts involving the Royal family.

Following the presentation, Fahmi noted that requests for the removal of these accounts were executed. To date, social media platform providers have taken down 14,750 of these accounts. Fahmi shared this update in a Facebook post, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address the issue.

Additionally, Fahmi informed His Royal Highness about the implementation of the Electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) identity verification system. This system is aimed at strengthening the protection of children and families in the digital environment. Fahmi expressed gratitude for the views and advice of His Royal Highness regarding the abuse of online platforms and issues concerning religion, race, and the Royal institution (3R issues), which have become increasingly concerning.

Fahmi acknowledged the Sultan of Selangor's concerns about the current issues circulating on social media and the methods employed by authorities to address them.
