MCMC Removes Over 40,000 Fake And Scam Content Items From Online Platforms

Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has effectively removed 10,493 pieces of fake content and 30,427 scam-related items from online platforms between January and April 15 this year. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasized the importance of verifying information before accepting it, due to the increasing prevalence of misinformation online.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Teo highlighted that most people now source their information from the internet, which necessitates a higher level of digital literacy to discern the accuracy of the content consumed. Speaking at the 2025 Communications Ministry-level ‘Let’s Read Together’ programme, she urged the public to critically evaluate online information.

Teo further noted the commitment of the MADANI Government to promote safe internet usage, particularly among children, through initiatives like the Safe Internet Campaign. This campaign, aimed at primary and secondary schools as well as public universities, seeks to educate students on the potential risks of the digital world. As of May 1, the campaign has already been implemented in nine schools.

Addressing the ‘Let’s Read Together’ programme, Teo stressed the significance of reading as a tool for mental development, empathy, and critical thinking. She suggested that a society engaged in reading becomes more knowledgeable and grounded in values, fostering mutual respect among diverse communities.

Furthermore, Teo commended the BERNAMA Digital Library for its efforts to promote a reading culture through various initiatives. She encouraged the public to embrace reading as a means to develop a rational and informed citizenry, capable of resisting misleading information in the digital age.
