Jalan telaga air: Police arrested a Vietnamese man who not only stole from a supermarket here but also attempted to take an 11-month-old baby hostage while trying to escape in an incident on Jalan Telaga Air here today. Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman reported that the incident occurred at 12.45 pm when the supermarket supervisor noticed the man attempting to leave the premises with unpaid seafood items.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the supervisor, who filed the complaint, initially managed to catch the suspect, but the man escaped. In his attempt to avoid capture, the foreigner grabbed an 11-month-old baby boy from a family member and wielded a knife, threatening the public and the child.
Anuar stated that the situation was brought under control with the assistance of several supermarket employees and bystanders. The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was overpowered and detained until police arrived after being notified by customers.
Further investigations are ongoing, with the case being reviewed under Sections 380, 324, and 506 of the Penal Code, which pertain to theft in a building, causing injury, and criminal intimidation. Prior to the arrest, several videos circulated online, depicting the dramatic scene where the foreign man attempted to flee while holding a plastic bag and a knife, allegedly trying to abduct the baby for ransom.
