Kuala lumpur: The deployment of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) in Lebanon is not just a peacekeeping mission for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), but also an investment in strengthening Malaysia's image as a peace-loving nation. Joint Forces Commander Lt Gen Datuk Seri Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim emphasized the significance of this mission during an interview on Bernama TV's 'Apa Khabar Malaysia' programme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's sustained involvement in the mission provides MAF personnel with opportunities for gaining real operational experience that cannot be fully obtained through training alone. Malaysia has been participating in peacekeeping missions since its early years, starting in Congo, and has so far engaged in 38 missions under the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations.
Tengku Muhammad Fauzi noted that the deployment under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is unique as it is the longest peacekeeping mission Malaysia has been a part of and includes military observers and staff officers at the UNIFIL Headquarters. He highlighted that this involvement also strengthens regional bilateral ties, especially with the inclusion of personnel from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF).
Malaysia's excellent track record in international missions has enhanced global confidence in its military leadership, which has previously led missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Timor-Leste. The real operational experience gained by MALBATT personnel, including dealing with unpredictable security situations, is invaluable.
The deployment also impacts military personnel's families, who endure a year-long separation. Tengku Muhammad Fauzi acknowledged the sacrifices made by families, emphasizing the challenging nature of such long separations.
In terms of community relations, the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) approach, synonymous with the MAF doctrine, is crucial for winning the hearts and minds of the local population. Pre-deployment training includes cross-cultural education to prepare personnel for their roles in Lebanon.
Support from the local community is vital for the success of peacekeeping missions. MAF personnel not only carry out security duties but also engage with the community, local authorities, and NGOs. The experience from these missions enhances the MAF's level of readiness, with a focus on planning and preparedness.
Tengku Muhammad Fauzi expressed gratitude to the government for its support of the MAF and praised the resilience of the personnel's families, who remain the pillars of strength for Malaysia's heroes serving abroad.
