Kuala lumpur: Sending a large Malaysian contingent to the 2025 SEA Games and the 2025 ASEAN Para Games (APG) in Thailand is not aimed at pursuing short-term success, but rather a strategic move to build experience and confidence ahead of the hosting of both games in Malaysia in 2027. Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh emphasized this approach during a recent event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, almost half of the total athletes sent will compete in team events, which is described as an important investment to strengthen the country’s sports unity and readiness in the long term. Hannah Yeoh highlighted that the participation is not merely about numbers but a calculated effort to nurture continuity and maturity among athletes. She pointed out that focusing solely on short-term medal potential could deny young talents the exposure they need to become the country’s future sports icons.
Hannah Yeoh made these remarks at the Jalur Gemilang Handover Ceremony to the Malaysian contingent for the 2025 SEA Games and 2025 APG. She also underscored the significance of discipline, emotional management, and the prudent use of social media among athletes, particularly when dealing with the pressures of international competition.
Meanwhile, the minister mentioned that the government is committed to improving the welfare of athletes. Efforts include enhancements in social protection, allowances, training facilities, and logistical support to ensure athletes can concentrate fully on their performance. She expressed hope that athletes will uphold their responsibilities and excel when competing on the field.
Furthermore, Hannah Yeoh stated that true success transcends the number of medals won, focusing instead on the discipline, courage, and commitment of athletes representing the country. Earlier, the 2025 SEA Games contingent chef de mission Nurul Huda Abdullah announced a target of 200 medals, while the 2025 APG CDM Mohd Zarrawi Ravi Abdullah set a target of 181 medals for Malaysia’s contingent.
Malaysia will deploy 1,142 athletes accompanied by 515 officials for the 2025 SEA Games, while 236 athletes and 117 officials will participate in the 2025 APG. The 2025 SEA Games will occur from December 9-20, with the 2025 APG scheduled from January 20-26.
