Malaysia’s Services Producer Price Index Rises by 1.0 Percent in Fourth Quarter

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) rose one per cent in the fourth quarter (4Q) of 2025, maintaining the same rate of increase for the third consecutive quarter, said Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM) today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin stated in a press release that the accommodation, food, and beverage service activities index saw a 3.1 percent rise, a slight decline from the 3.4 percent increase recorded in the third quarter. This growth was propelled by a 3.5 percent rise in the restaurants and mobile food service activities index and a three percent increase in beverage service activities.

The transportation index experienced a significant increase of 2.2 percent, a notable rise from the previous quarter's 0.5 percent, largely due to a 7.1 percent surge in the passenger air transport index. The education index also saw a 1.5 percent increase, supported by secondary education and higher education indices, which rose by 2.3 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively. Other indices that reported increases included health (0.7 percent), real estate activities (0.6 percent), and professional services (0.5 percent).

Mohd Uzir noted a 3.8 percent decline in the arts, entertainment, and recreation index, following a slight 0.4 percent increase in the previous quarter. The information and communication index also saw a minor decrease of 0.1 percent.

Quarter-on-quarter, the SPPI increased by 0.3 percent, up from a 0.1 percent rise in the last quarter. This growth was mainly driven by transportation (1.2 percent) and accommodation and food and beverage service activities (0.8 percent) indices. Real estate activities, education, and health indices each recorded a 0.2 percent increase, while the professional index rose by 0.1 percent, consistent with the previous quarter. However, the arts, entertainment, and recreation index faced a 3.3 percent decline, and the information and communication index remained unchanged.

On an annual basis, the chief statistician highlighted a marginal 0.9 percent increase in the SPPI for 2025, compared with a 0.7 percent rise in 2024. This increase was mainly driven by accommodation, food, and beverage service activities (3.4 percent), followed by the arts, entertainment, and recreation index (1.8 percent) and education indices (1.3 percent). The health index increased by 0.7 percent, professional services by 0.6 percent, and real estate activities by 0.2 percent. Conversely, the transportation index declined by 0.4 percent, and the information and communication index saw a slight 0.1 percent decrease.
