Malaysia’s Ramadan Moon-Sighting Method Gains Global Recognition

Kuala lumpur: The practice of sighting the new moon, or hilal, to determine the start of the Ramadan fasting month, a method employed by Malaysia, has now gained international recognition as a benchmark.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr. Zulkifli Hassan highlighted that Malaysia's approach has been acknowledged due to its systematic and authoritative methodology, which combines ilmu falak syarie (Islamic astronomy) with modern technology. This recognition is further supported by the consistent and high-standard implementation of moon-sighting observations throughout the nation.

Dr. Zulkifli stated, 'Malaysia is known for high-quality hilal sighting and has become a reference for several foreign countries. Many refer to the observations we carry out, and some even regard our observations as the best.' He emphasized the nation's development in Islamic astronomy during the official Ramadan New Moon Sighting 1447 Hijrah ceremony, organized by the Mufti of Federal Territory Department (JMWP) the previous night.

The minister explained that moon-sighting activities were conducted at 29 locations from Sabah to Perlis, reflecting the government's commitment to ensuring the early determination of Ramadan is achieved systematically and transparently using recognized methods. He also mentioned the strategic collaborations with institutions like Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, which further bolster the country's expertise in Islamic astronomy.

Moreover, JMWP Falak committee member Ts Shahrin Ahmad elaborated on the technological advancements that enhance the accuracy of Malaysia's moon-sighting data. The use of high-precision optical instruments, such as high-powered telescopes, CCD cameras, and specialized software, has significantly improved the reliability of observations. This technological integration allows for real-time data coordination with control centers, ensuring that reports are accurate and verifiable.

Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil expressed the importance of the new moon sighting ceremony, emphasizing its significance for the religious obligations of Muslims. He noted that the decision impacts millions and is approached with utmost trust and responsibility.
