Malaysia’s Non-Employment Injury Scheme to Enhance Worker Protection

Kuala lumpur: The government’s initiative to broaden social security coverage to include non-employment injuries has been acknowledged as a crucial measure that will benefit all Malaysians, as stated by social protection advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. He emphasized the necessity of protecting workers beyond regular working hours, noting that accidents and injuries can occur at any time and place, not just at the workplace.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee highlighted that in the current fast-paced environment, workers encounter risks both at work and in their daily lives. He mentioned that road accidents, slips, falls, and other unforeseen incidents can inflict serious harm and leave families vulnerable without adequate protection. This statement came in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement about the forthcoming Non-Employment Injury Scheme aimed at addressing the rising incidence of flexible and remote work arrangements.

The Prime Minister indicated that the scheme is a part of the government’s efforts to fortify the legal framework, ensuring workers have protection beyond standard working hours. Lee supported this initiative, arguing that round-the-clock coverage will assure workers that their welfare is secured regardless of when or where an accident occurs.

Lee underscored the importance of this move, stating that workers are the backbone of the economy and their safety and well-being must be a national priority. He noted that extending protection to non-employment injuries would steer Malaysia towards a more comprehensive and humane social security system, thereby strengthening the safety net for workers and alleviating financial hardship for families.

He urged all stakeholders, including the government, employers, and employees, to back the initiative, ensuring that every worker is protected 24 hours a day.
