Malaysia’s National Fraud Portal Enhances Digital Scam Prevention

Bangkok:Malaysia's National Fraud Portal has emerged as a vital tool in the fight against digital financial scams, facilitating quicker fund tracing and recovery through collaborative efforts among financial institutions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Assistant Governor Dr. Norhana Endut revealed that approximately 95 percent of fraud and scam cases in Malaysia involve authorised transactions, where victims are tricked into approving payments. She emphasized that technological advancements have made scams more sophisticated and personalized, while the rapid growth of instant payments has reduced the window for authorities to intervene.

Dr. Norhana shared Malaysia's strategies during a panel discussion titled 'Bangkok Blueprint Implementation From Policy Frameworks to Tackling Digital Fraud' at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. She explained that Malaysia's approach includes prevention, enforcement, recovery, and consumer awareness, underpinned by enhanced fraud detection, information sharing, and collaboration across sectors.

The National Fraud Portal provides an automated platform for reporting cases, tracing funds, and recovering lost assets. It allows financial institutions to monitor money flows across different payment networks, reducing the time needed for fund tracing by 75 percent and enabling quicker detection of new accounts.

Dr. Norhana stressed the necessity of coordinated action among banks, telecommunications firms, and digital platforms to share intelligence and address emerging threats swiftly. She also underscored the importance of shared infrastructure and clear protocols to improve coordination and minimize duplication and costs.

The panel discussion was part of the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, where Malaysia aimed to strengthen collective efforts for a secure, trusted, and inclusive digital financial system. The Malaysian delegation was led by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
