Malaysia’s Harimau Malaya Secures Third Place in FIFA 2026 ASEAN Cup

Jakarta:Malaysia's national football team, Harimau Malaya, achieved third place in the FIFA 2026 ASEAN Cup campaign, showcasing impressive statistics and teamwork, as stated by interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cheng Hoe attributed the team's success to their fighting spirit and the strong bonds among players, who worked like a family. He emphasized that the positive atmosphere within the team, with shared goals and a unified desire for success, was reflected in their performance throughout the tournament.

Malaysia concluded their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Vietnam, thanks to a goal by substitute forward Fergus Tierney in the 62nd minute. This win broke a 12-year winless streak against Vietnam, with Malaysia finishing the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a goal. The team recorded three wins and one draw, scoring a total of 10 goals.

In the Group A Division 1 matches, Malaysia secured a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh, a goalless draw against Indonesia, and a 6-0 thrashing of Singapore. Despite having the same points and goal difference as the host team, Malaysia missed out on the final based on the total number of goals scored.

Cheng Hoe also acknowledged that while the team had achieved significant success, there is still a long journey ahead. He emphasized the need for continued effort to build a stronger squad capable of facing future challenges. The coach expressed the necessity for hard work to ensure the team remains on the right track.

Meanwhile, Indonesia claimed the championship of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup by defeating a 10-man Thailand side 4-2 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
