Malaysia’s Finance Minister II Optimistic About 2Q 2026 Economic Growth

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's economic growth for the second quarter of 2026 is expected to be stable, according to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Speaking ahead of the official announcement of the second quarter's gross domestic product (GDP) figures, scheduled for August 14, Amir Hamzah expressed cautious optimism about the country's economic performance.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amir Hamzah shared these remarks with reporters after his keynote address at the RHB Progress Series 2026. The Finance Minister, however, refrained from providing more details on the anticipated economic outcomes. The official GDP data, to be released by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) next week, will shed light on the country's economic status from April to June.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) previously released its advance GDP estimates for the second quarter on July 17. These estimates indicated a 5.8 percent expansion in Malaysia's economy, following a 5.4 percent growth in the previous quarter. The increase was largely supported by growth across most economic sectors, with the exception of agriculture, which experienced a contraction.

In the first quarter of 2026, Malaysia's economy grew by 5.4 percent, surpassing the advance estimate of 5.3 percent. This growth was driven by strong domestic demand, investment activities, and exports, which continue to be key factors in Malaysia's economic development.
