Malaysia’s Domestic Trade Thrives Despite Geopolitical Challenges

Malaysia: Malaysia's domestic trade activity remains resilient and continues to expand amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, according to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the rakyat and ensuring the sustainability of the country's trade ecosystem.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the deputy minister highlighted efforts to streamline regulatory and control systems to reduce bureaucracy, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on growth rather than administrative burdens. She stressed the importance of monitoring the integrity of domestic supply chains to minimize business disruptions and boost investor confidence.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia reported a substantial increase in sales value within the distribution trade sector, which includes wholesale, retail, and motor vehicles, reaching RM169 billion in March 2026. This figure represents a 9.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year, demonstrating the sector's robust performance.

Data from KPDN's Unit of Statistics and Economic Analysis within the Policy, Strategic Planning, and International Division showed a strong rise in sales value for wholesale and retail trade during the first quarter of 2026, with a growth rate of 7.5 percent compared to 4.6 percent in the first quarter of 2025. Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh emphasized the need for businesses to adopt strategic planning and development in the face of complex global economic conditions.

She further urged companies to focus on brand building, market position strengthening, and customer trust enhancement, stating that visibility, credibility, and strategic positioning are essential for business success. The 7 Mega Growth Strategies 2026 program, organized by KNKV Group Sdn Bhd, provided a platform for corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, and industry players to discuss strategies for business growth and resilience.

KNKV Group chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zurainah Musa noted the program's role in fostering meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and cross-border collaboration to create long-term value. She expressed hope that the event would lead to greater international collaboration, trade opportunities, and strategic partnerships between Malaysia and the global business community.
