Kuala lumpur: Malaysians affected by disasters are eligible to receive the Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) up to four times a year, subject to the claim conditions set by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). NADMA Community and Social Development Section director Jefny Muhammad stated that this assistance is designed to alleviate the burden of those impacted by various disasters, including floods, landslides, fires, tidal waves, and other calamities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, each eligible head of household can claim RM1,000 per incident, allowing for a maximum of RM4,000 annually if affected by disasters on four different occasions. However, claims can only be made once every three months. If a victim experiences multiple disasters within a three-month span, only one BWI claim can be lodged. A new application can be submitted if another disaster occurs after the three-month period.

Jefny Muhammad shared that during the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon season, 108,000 households nationwide received BWI, totaling RM108 million. This figure is lower than the previous monsoon season, which saw 287,000 households receiving aid amounting to RM287 million. The reduction is attributed to the fewer major disasters experienced this season compared to the last.

He highlighted the improved accessibility of BWI through NADMA's digital registration and community verification system, which has streamlined the verification process and expedited aid distribution. Victims can register or update their information using the myIBJKM system by scanning a QR code available at temporary relief centers.

Furthermore, Jefny emphasized NADMA's push for strategic collaborations with non-governmental organizations to bolster community disaster preparedness through Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) courses. The CBDRM program focuses on community involvement in identifying disaster risks, planning mitigation strategies, enhancing readiness, and executing timely actions before, during, and after disasters.
