Shanghai:The Malaysian contingent begins its campaign at the WorldSkills Competition (WSC) Shanghai 2026 today, with 22 national youth participants competing in 21 out of the 64 skill areas. They aim to secure Malaysia's first gold medal in this prestigious global skills event.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the National Exhibition and Convention Centre will host the Malaysian participants as they showcase their talents in sectors such as manufacturing and engineering technology, information and communication technology, construction and building technology, and creative arts and fashion.

Malaysia's involvement in the 48th edition of the WSC is part of a broader effort led by China to enhance bilateral relations through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan, also the country's WSC Chef de Mission, noted that the national team underwent extensive preparations following the previous competition in Lyon, France.

Dr Ahmad emphasized the dedication of the Department of Skills Development, the Ministry of Human Resources, and the Ministry of Works in preparing the team over the past two years. He expressed confidence in their abilities, citing their successes in past regional competitions, including winning 13 gold medals at WorldSkills ASEAN Manila 2025 and achieving the third position in Asia at WorldSkills Asia Taipei 2025.

The Malaysian team has participated in team-building camps and friendly competitions globally, including in China, Australia, Russia, and France, to enhance their readiness for the WSC Shanghai 2026.

The competition, which runs from September 23 to 26, involves 1,400 young skilled professionals from over 65 countries, competing in 64 skill areas. The event also features a WorldSkills Expo and a WorldSkills Conference, which will take place from September 23 to 25.
